Lunteren

Uitkijktoren en Galerie The village of Lunteren itself consists for more than two third of scenic areas. Lovers of peace and quite will be pleasantly surprised by the serenity and variety of it all. Vast and hilly woodlands alternating with rolling heath, hidden pools and shifting sand drifts.

Nearby you will also find two extensive heath lands (Ginkelse Heath and Eder Heath). Both were the site of massive Allied airborne landings during operation Market Garden in 1944. Nowadays these vast heath lands are the domain of several flocks of sheep that are peacefully grazing the moors while guarded by shepherds.

Just opposite Belmont begins a piece of dense and hilly woodland called ‘Het Lunterse Buurtbosch’. At one of the highest points you’ll find the observation tower ‘De Koepel’ from which you can enjoy beautiful panoramas.

In a vast stretch of woods to the east of Lunteren three boulders, which in-between are placed exactly in line according to both the summer and winter solstice, indicate the geographical middle point of the Netherlands.

National Park ‘De Hoge Veluwe’

In this natural park, where art and culture are harmoniously joined with the surrounding nature, you will also find the well known Kröller-Müller Museum – with a wonderful permanent Van Gogh Exhibition – as well as the underground museum ‘The Museonder’.

The National Park De Hoge Veluwe is drawing yearly at least 600.000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad. The natural park is populated by hundreds of mouflons, wild boar, roe deer and red deer. If you like, you can go for a bicycle ride on the well known ‘white bikes’ over the extensive network of bike tracks of De Hoge Veluwe.

Natuurschoon op de Veluwe
When it comes to aspects of the natural world De Hoge Veluwe has a lot to offer. Apart from being a haven of peace and quiet, the landscape is various and unique. Vast heath lands alternate with beautiful woods, winding ridges, hidden pools and lush hills.

The sand drifts, the famous shifting dunes of the Dutch interior, are shifting and drifting again in all their glory, now the sand drift project has been completed. De Hoge Veluwe consists for one half of woodlands and for the other half of wide open spaces.

The rich and various flora and fauna of the park lies waiting to be discovered. Be surprised by the abundance of big game: deer, mouflons, roe deer and wild boar that can jump out of the bush just in front of you. At a number of game spotting sites throughout the park you can see them quite well: especially during the twilight of dawn and dusk.

The natural park boasts dozens of rare animals which can be found on the so-called ‘red list’ of threatened species. Among which the wheatear and the nightjar, heath frog, grass snake, comma butterfly, wood pearl butterfly, pine marten and the badger.

National Park De Hoge Veluwe lies some 10 kilometres from Belmont and is easily accessible by bicycle. A type of transport which will stand you in good stead in further exploring this beautiful natural park once you are there. You can rent bikes at Belmont.
